Now i don't have any door locks on my Mk III apart from the emergency door lock on the passenger side so iam guessing this is the lock you are talking about??

If so yes your right...things are tight in there and if memory serves me well there is clip that is holding the key barrel in place from inside the door panel and that needs to be removed for the barrel to be pull out to be replaced,
