If the handbrake mechanism isn't fully released it won't reset itself correctly when the pistons are wound back in. In some cases the internal mechanism can be damaged if done incorrectly.
It best to release the handbrake adjustment first - disconnect the cable ends from the caliper - then wind the pistons back in. Reassemble the calipers and cables depress the foot brake around ten times - then activate the handbrake around 10 times and then adjust the handbrake cables up until the brakes lock and then release the adjustment until the wheels are free to turn.
