Update on problem.
The repair lasted about one day and recurred. A local friend of a friend said he would call around to decode the immobiliser, but let me down after letting me wait for nearly two weeks. In the meantime, Renault chased down the code for me.
Diagnosed the root cause myself, the button on the end of the wiper stalk which changes the trip computer display was faulty. Removed the offending button and all is well now, imobiliser working as it should do.
Diagnosis as follows:-
1 Immobiliser light flashing, voice says immobiliser fault, car will not start. Press acellerator pedal, imobiliser lights solid.
2. Disconnect battery for five minutes and reconnect.
3. Disconnect wiper stalk
4. Turn on ignition, press accelerator pedal, Immobiliser light goes out. Turn off ignition.
5. Reconnect stalk, turn on ignition, immobiliser light on solid.
Problem is in wiper stalk. I had to pry the button out of the end to get it to work.
