I think for everyone who wants it to do a 'gradual resume', there'll be someone else who'll expect it to get back up to speed more or less as quickly as possible. It's just a case of not being able to please all of the people all of the time.

I have the 6 speed manual transmission, and the cruise will still pull reasonably well up to the chosen speed in top gear, provided that I haven't let it drop much below 50 (a gearchange is required if it drops below 45.) It feels like it's more or less flooring the pedal, which would result in kickdown on an auto box. From the sound of things, your cruise control is just doing what I'd sensibly expect it to do.

I'm not familiar with the Renault auto boxes, but if you can drop it into manual mode and then select a high gear, it'll probably do what you want it to do. Having said that, it'll be less messing around if you just bring the car more or less back up to speed yourself before re-engaging cruise.
