Thanks ChristopherM. My problem was that the hole that supports the spring anchor had it's reinforcement broken and therefore the spring had bent and lost tension. Attempting to bend the spring back only broke the spring in two! After a few hours of faffing around with various springs (brought from Maplin at £2.99), I eventually hit on the idea of placing a compression spring in the little compartment under the lever (just under the blue cross on your picture). This has worked for over a week now. Renault's price to fix = £260 parts plus £120 labour. My total cost = £2.99 plus a day's work. Thanks again.
