Using old Engine Oil to protect Nuts / Drum Brake

Hi, my old engine oil from my 1.5 DCI was nice and black. My neighbour wanted some to paint his fence. Apparantly it protects it for the next 10 years or so. I decided to use some to paint the outside of my brake drum and coat some nuts. Amazing its like show polish on an old leather shoe.

My question is would this be ok to coat the underbody and wheel arch? May attract more dirt sticking to it?

Anyway thought its worth asking, as some parts especially under the rear shock absorbers is really rusty....and I hate rust...
