To put it into perspective sand (or silica) in itself is not inherently carcinogenic. It only when repeatedly exposed to fine air-borne particles in or around the 0.5 micron size is it likely to cause lung diseases which can develop into cancers. Whereas used engine oil contains contaminants in both solid, liquid and gaseous forms.
