That makes more sense.
Not knowing exactly what the key barrel looks like, there are a couple of possibilities.
The key barrel on some models have a eccentric pin casted on barrel if its broken you will have to replace the lock.(Which I will put my money on, is what happend)
Other locks have a lever attached to the back of the lock, that could be broken or the retaining clip could have come off.
I'd say the best to do is open the door up, take a light and look at if you can see anything that might be broken or loose while turning the key, you dont see anything its better to get a new lock.
