Scenic 1 2001 fuel consumption on motorways

Ive had our 2001 Scenic 1.6 16V for about 6 months.
The odd thing about it is the fuel consumption on motorways seems to be worse than my normal run to work and back, which is on B roads with a couple of towns to drive through.

If I really drive carefully to work I can get about 43 44 mpg which works out about 430 miles on a full tank, to when the low fuel light first starts to glow.

On the motorway at about 70 mph the mpg drops to 36 37.

Also the trip computer seems very optimistic regarding the mileage until the next fuel.
It normally reads about 550 miles after I have just filled up and is still reading about 100 miles just before the fuel light comes on

What sort of mileage are people getting with a Scenic 1 (2001) and do they all start drinking the fuel when on the motorway ?

Thanks for any replies.
