An axle is something which carries wheels on a vehicle whether it powered or not.

Youe car will be front-wheel drive - that is known as the live axle.

Have a look underneath. If there are no suspension coils springs then you have the torsion bar set-up. And as you father-in-law says it looks like the complete rear axle assembly may need replaced but you'll not know exactly what has failed without detailed inspection. It could some aspect of the asemmbly has failed or at worse where it attached to the body has corroded or such.
The cost of replacement from Renault would be many times more than the car is worth and your cheapest option would be to source a second unit and do a transplant.
