Scenic-lambda sensor ?

Hi , I have a Scenic 1.6 Alize petrol automatic & have severe fuel consumption problems & a juddering occuring at low revs.
The fuel cunsumption is down to 17miles to the gallon !!!
I let a mechanic have a look for me & he seemed to think that the lambda sensor was missing.
The garage where i bought the vehicle have said it doesn't have a sensor as it is an irish import & that it is a coil ? fault. To which I thought they are conning me.
Can anyone tell me where the sensor is fitted ? if there is one !! & should the vehicle have passed an M.O.T in the first place.
The vehicle is out of it's 3 month warranty but I feel I am being ripped off & I refuse to pay for the coil 's that they say are the problem , is trading standards my next option.

Hope anyone can help both technicaly & legally it would be appreciated.

Cheers Chris
