I think you're right my friend about the hard life! I suspected the fan straight away but presuming more likely to also be the thermostat as well as previous issues with the head gasket. Theres a part item to do with it being a sensor of some kind for the idle control which I suspect is causing the major problems. I don't know what it's called, how to remove it or if it's worth replacing. Its situated just behind and connected in some way to the throttle on the engine.
Thanks for your replies so far, it's a great help and hope you can answer this one, as it will give me some indication of whether to forget repairing due to costs and time or not.
