Discount out of hand any suggestion that you did not drop the bonnet properly when you last opened it. The fact that you hadn't lifted it for at least three weeks and you had, on the day, covered 3/4 of your journey amply proves that there was no "human error" involved.
They will argue the point but, on the evidence you described, they haven't a leg to stand on.
Did you see my posting that said this has happened in France as well?
