Who knows how long it may last and I for one wouldn't be making any guesses especially when it comes to brakes and no-one can even see the darned things to make any judgement.
On the other hand you could put the old washing machine in the boot with a length of rope and throw it out as an anchor if you need to stop sharpish.
A set of new brake shoes should only set you back around £12 or so.
Remember brakes are like your best friends - you miss them most when they ain't around.
