I had the same problem on my last car, a Toyota Avensis. On the Avensis you can buy just the clockspring unit, at 140.
However, my mate is a dab hand with a soldering iron (he does car audio/car phoen kits) and was able to repair the actual ribbon and then coat in epoxy.
So it was repairable, just VERY fiddly.
