Is that starting from cold or all the time?.

I suspect it's something that'll soon sort it's self out,I'd keep it brimmed with diesel and see what happens.I would definately change the filter,though.If the problem only arrises when starting from cold,it's possible that one or more glow plugs have been damaged,so if the problem persists I'd have these looked at.The higher burn temperature of the petrol may have melted or burnt them out,but it's unusual.

No need to worry about buying a new engine just yet!

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
