I'd reckon that if the car kept going in conditions that others would've had problems with, then almost certainly the 4wd was working.

I also wouldn't imagine that a light should be displayed, as its not the same as with traction control or esp (which are really last resort safety nets), designed to assist you from a potentially hazardous situation; 4wd is intended purely to keep you moving, not to defy physics.
