Usually when this happens, it's trapped wires. Watch out particularly for wires getting stuck behind the alignment spindle on the back of the unit and the bracket that it's supposed to locate into.
You might find it easier to remove the storage tray that occupies the other DIN-E slot and replace it once you have the stereo in place. That'll let you get your hand behind the unit and move any stray cables back into place.

Edit: Just realised this is probably a Lag I not II, so I don't think the bit about the extra DIN-E slot applies
