Question Laguna - Burning smell and smoke

Had a service and MoT not long ago (the car that is, not me). I thought the tyres would need changing but they said they were only worn round the sides due to tracking. Had new brake pads.

Started the car this morning and noticed a knocking sound which seemed to be coming from under the front of the car. Hadn't gone more than a couple of hundred yards (doing 20-30mph) when there was an awful smell of burning coming into the car. I pulled in and stopped and noticed that there was a bit of smoke which seemed to be coming from the left, front wheel arch area. I checked the wheel and it wasn't hot, neither were the brakes. Waited for a while then very slowly drove it home and got the smell again.

We've had a look but can't see anything obvious. Any ideas what this might be caused by?

Cheers, Ma Griff
