That's a pity.

Unfortunately, its a frequent occurence to find a 'dead-end; when you're looking for a point of access to permit an otherwise straightforward repair.

I don't know if the metal has been exposed, but I'd ensure it has a good skin of paint protecting the metal, as with all the salt being spread over the roads - corrosion is an unwanted complication for the repairer to address.
