Just watch that the tape doesn't cause more harm than good.
Tape loses adhesion as it gets colder (I've been in the situation when trying to spray at temps close to zero, where the masking tape was just falling off).
Plus, it can still allow damp salt to enter the damaged area, whilst keeping it out of sight from you.
Lastly, when you come to removing the tape - it''ll probably pull away more than the damaged paint.
I'd either apply underseal or hammerite as a temporary protective measure.
This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.
