I had the bootlid trim open today, and the only possible source I could find for the water was the numberplate lights. They aren't a tight fit, and it seems that the spray comes through the edges.

I cut a piece of foam to shape, spread it with silicon water repellent, and put them back in with the foam as a seal.
I would have used a bit of bicycle inner tube, but didn't have any, but as I found that one of the bulbs is burnt, I'll have to open it again anyway, and then I'll cut a seal from rubber.
Hope that was indeed the problem.
