Re Cambelt change

A few years ago when I had my 'W' Reg Scenic with only just over 10,000 miles on the clock and out of warranty, I was cruising down the M5 when the Charging light came on, after pulling on the hard shoulder & lifting the bonnet, low & behold the alternator belt had gone as expected, but the frightening thing was I then discovered it had also taken the cambelt with it. I was recovered to Renault Salisbury, who carried out the repair to the engine, fitted a new modified altenator to prevent it happening again. The final bill came to just under 1000. Since there was only just over 10,000 on the clock Renault paid up & I just had to pay for a hire car for 4 days while it was being done. apparently it was a known fault and the car should have been recalled for the Alternator mod!
I never did feel comfortable on the motorway after that and traded in as soon as the Scenic 2 came out
