Theres a unit bolted to the end of the cylinder head above the gearbox,thats the vaccum pump.Follow the pipe from it to the servo unit and check it for splits/cracks/holes.

Ideally you will need a vaccum gauge to see if the pump is up to spec but you may get lucky and find a problem with the pipe work.

Is there a hissing noise coming from the pedal area at all?.(with the engine running).

How many times can you pump the pedal (again with the engine running and the car stationary) before it gets hard?.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
