Hi there Rich.

Tough luck, but we've all been there before.

The grey bit is usually referred to as a rubbing strip, and is intended to protect the painted bumper by being the first point of contact with another object, and also it covers up a few of the mounting bolts which secures the bumper 'proper' onto the car.

Its something which can probably be picked up secondhand for not much, and will just push into place.
