The distortion is simply due to the fact that the speakers cannot handle the high levels BASS that you are feeding them..
As you have found the larger the speaker then the greater the ability to handle the BASS notes before distortion..

If your head unit has a Highpass filter control, then set it at a cut off of 80Hz. This will significantly reduce the distortion by stopping the frequecies below 80Hz... If you do not have this control then you need to insert a High pass filter in each speaker input to stop the BASS..

To get the BASS back you will need to fit an external subwoofer..
