Just to clarify a point Chrostopher - the hardboard was only going to be used for creating a template for the manufacture of a permanent replacement possibly made from either plastic or aluminium.
The risk of belt damage has increased over the years mainly due to the use of flat multi-ribbed belts. The risk seems to be higher in hot weather whereby small particles of sticky tarred road grit can easily stick.
There are many occasions where a driver can't avoid road debris - one where it is very small and can't be seen or worse still if it is ejected from a vehicle in front and you have no opportunity to take avoiding action. Stuck behind a large truck on a packed motorway with one of it tyres disintegrating springs to mind.
Yes there is a risk of small road debris getting into the rear discs that's why many Saab's and Hondas have a third mini mudflap just in front of the rear wheels.
Yes I would agree with your theory that many of the younger generation of mechanics can't be ar$*d to replace the darned things.
