I imagine that checking the seals would be quite involved?
Well yes taking out the master cylinder and dismantling it to inspect the seals to see if they are damaged or the sealing edges are rounded/ worn is certainly going to be a long involved job.
If there is no brake fluid loss and no air in the system usual indication is if the brake pedal sinks to the floor when you hold your foot hard on the pedal. Might be worth getting some one else to pump the brakes whilst holding each flexible hose in turn and see if you can feel them excessively expanding / ballooning as this will also impact on pedal travel.
