It's the same on our 04 model Laguna, the card is "physically" locked in.

It sounds as tho tho there may be a problem with your card reader bigstu - as I am pretty sure that the "info" regarding fuel levels is stored on the card, along with a few other settings.

It's a long shot but try replacing the batteries in the card and "vacuuming" out the card reader slot - I know access is almost non-existant but just holding the vac nozzle over the slot may remove some stray dust.
Or you may have just removed the card too quickly, if you didn't quite press the button hard enough - is the "slot" at the end of the keycard intact? or is it cracked or broken, as this may be why it isn't "locked" in place when the engine is on.
