Sorry my terminology is crap!! If you look on your speedometer there is a 'reset' button. This is what he pressed to check my oil levels... but I don't know if it would work with mpg! My manual says that I should be able to get a current fuel comsumption value... but still not sure how Thats button is the only way I think I could get it... though it may just reset the average.
