It's not unusual for new pads to have a soft feel until they bed in. Many brake manufacturers include a printed note stating you should try and avoid aggressive breaking until things have settled in.

Also the hardness of a brake pedal is not necessarily a means of judging how effective your brakes may be. For instance when I had my Lag II it had a soft feel to the pedal but the brakes where good whereas my Honda has a hard pedal - yet the brakes just don't feel as effective when it comes to stopping.

Also does the Subaru have reinforced braided brake hoses - thus may account in the difference in feel.
