Question Noise from auxilliary belt?

Could anyone offer an opinion on something which may be very very trivial and not a problem. Over the last few days there has been a squeaking noise from the area of the auxilliary belt, noticeable when idling. A spray of WD40 on the belt, or pulleys, quietens this down for a while. This may be nothing but a couple of years ago a noise from this region, though of a different kind, resulted in a breakdown in which the power steering pulley came away, the belt jammed against the engine casing and the timing belt broke, but was apparently also frayed. This may not be relevant but it explains my nervousness about such noises. As I say this is a different noise eliminated temporarily by WD40, but what could cause it?
