When grease is smeared over the back of the brake pad it automatically contaminates the front edge of the piston and then creeps onto the piston seal due to the heat generated.

The bellows on the slider pins are not subjected to the same heat variations.
Adiitionally if the rubber pin slider bellows get rotted it easy and cheap to replace them but the cost of replacing a caliper is plenty expensive and even if only one caliper fails then it entails the cost of replacing two on the same axle so braking balance can be maintained.
