The sensor is NOT in the headlight, you have not been given the wrong light.
The sensor is on the windscreen just below the rearview mirror.There is a small opening in the "blacked" out area at the top of the windscreen, this is where both the light and rain sensors are.
You will probably find that this function has just been "switched off" inadvertantly either by yoursel or whoever fitted the replacement light unit.

There will be a section in your handbook telling you how to re-activiate this function.
As far as I can remember in the Laguna it is just a case of switching the lights on and off manually twice in quick succession with the ignition on. Will probably be very similar in the Clio. To be honest our are always set to auto and I never adjust them, sometimes I overide by switching on manually , but this only temporarily overides the auto feature.
