It may well be that there was a faulty glow plug but yours is a compression ignition engine and the glow plugs are not spark plugs in a petrol engine. I would not expect to see a difference in mpg on that. More probable would have been a reprogramming of the injection system. Was this mentioned?
I have been advised by my local Renault dealer that the glow plugs are also used for the control of emissions and having two replaced due to the fact that they were also staying on and draining the battery I noticed that the MPG increased by approx 3MPG to 48.
