I've never owned a Laguna, but a lot of people on here have trouble with the 1.9 dCi, so going for a petrol if you can stand the running costs is probably a good idea.
Also, with ropey French electrics, I would get the most basic car I could. I did this with my Clio and 95,000 miles of trouble-free motoring (except for one of those stupid airbag lamp problems which I think I have fixed) has probably proved me right.
