From my research I did before buying my Grand Espace, I would only go for the 2.0 DCi. Its a much better designed and built engine than the 1.9, its also a cam chain engine, so no cambelt expense or worries.
Mine had the swirl flap in the inlet manifold fail, but it was replaced under warrantee. Other than that, its donr 22k miles in the past 6 months without a hiccup, it returns between 40 to 41mpg on a good motorway run as an auto, and its supremely comfortable to drive, as well as being very practical.
As an alternative, how about the 1.9TDi Galaxy/Sharan/Alhambra?
