Dismantled the plastic box, housing the solenoid, to discover that the locking pin had been snapped at its base. It appears as though somebody forced the door open or forced it closed and snapped the pin clean off.
I was able to find a plastic rod of approximately the same diameter. I filed it down to match the locking pin diameter, drilled a channel in both and inserted a metal pin to strengthen the join. Stuck it all together with some glue and replaced it into the car.
Hey presto, bobs your uncle all the central locking is working again.
Thanks for all the pointers and help.
