I was able to find a plastic rod of approximately the same diameter. I filed it down to match the locking pin diameter, drilled a channel in both and inserted a metal pin to strengthen the join. Stuck it all together with some glue and replaced it into the car.

Hey presto, bobs your uncle all the central locking is working again.

Thanks for all the pointers and help.

You beat me to it. I was going to sugest that the "locking pin" may have been broken off. Honestly, I had a similar problem with an old Astra of ours.
