Well connected to the button is a small motor that turns when the central locking is activated and locks the button so it can not be pushed in. The main central locking electrics for the boot are not attached to the button just the little motor is.

Attached to the button is a bar which goes down to the lock to release the boot.

So in a way the the boot does not actual lock it justs deactivates the boot button from being pressed in to release the boot. If some one has pushed it hard whilst locked the o ring can come off and the button falls out.

A new button kit from renault is £57 plus vat and comes with a black button and a primed button.
