As a private sale, it is as you say buyer beware.
The buyer has a responsibility to check that the car is 'as described'.
If the seller advertised it as a certain mileage, it will be hard to prove that he did so deliberately.
The only way the law is on your side is if the car is not roadworthy, yet was sold as being so. Even then, it hardly warrants the hassle and likely cost of pursuing it.
I've been there and can tell you it's a waste of time trying to get recourse through the law.
