Driver'sWindscreen Wiper linkage/assembly

I have a 2005 Megane Scenic II. At the bottom of the driver's windscreen wiper, there's a circular hole which a short metal bar clips into (this bar makes the wiper move). On mine, whatever holds the bar into the hole has rusted, and it's separated. To replace it Renault say i have to buy the whole unit, instead of just the short bar. Replacement unit costs over 100! Anyone know of a cheaper way to fix this problem?
I've attached some photos to show what the problem is. Any help gratefully received!
