So what your friend has given you is a rather expensive and not particularly effective paperweight, though that's not to say that it can't have its uses.
If you ever want to turn on the car ignition but leave the car so that it can't be started, then sticking your friend's key in the slot might just do the trick (no promises though - I've never tried it.) I got an 'unchipped' key with a replacement lock for one of my Laguna I's, and it was quite handy for allowing the accessories circuit to be left on in the car without any possibility of the car being started.
