When the steering remote failed was probably the start of the problems. This may have been down to a loose connection, this connection may then have started to "arc" and spark" between the two - causing it to get hot and overheat.
Good luck with the manufacturers claim, but be warned, you may have a hard job proving that the connections were ok before the unit melted! I don't mean to sound negative, just know what manufacturers will do to try and wriggle out of the blame.
On a side issue - we had a problem at work a few years ago with the IEC mains outlet on the back of blood pressure monitors, similar thing, smoke and melting! To cut a long story short, we wrote to Manufacturers and govt bodies, manufacturer wrote back -"never seen this before anywhere in the worl", a few months later, identical fault, identical reply from company, same again a few months later. They tried to blame all sorts of other problems other than the fact it was theire quipment!
