I would get the cambelt changed pronto. It's £400 or so (or could be less if you look around) to replace but if it snaps and the engine goes bang, the damage may well be even greater.
I've never heard of the pulling away problem you mention, It might be that you are used to diesels - petrol engines feel torqueless in comparison and need far more revs.
My dCi temperature guage lights up to two then four bars (do you have the one with graduated LED's?) and stays there except in very cold weather, when it will drop to two when idling at traffic lights. It has to be about -4/-5 degrees outside for that to happen, though.
