Still does not sound right about replacing the timing belt, as the 2.0dci is chain driven. Therefore no cambelts to worry about.
You may get away with the
valve being cleaned.
There was a post with pictures on this forum on how to do it, so it might be worth a search.
If you like the car, it might be that you will need to book into a garage.
For info the engine is also used in a few Nissans it was designed by Renault and Nissan.
Let us know if you get it sorted and how.
I have the same engine and currently the mpg is showing 41.5, just doing 20 miles a day.
