Could I claim dealer negligence?

This may sound an odd question but I`m sure someone here will have experienced this before...
My car is dead as a timing belt bearing shattered. The garage told me the belt etc should have been changed almost 2 years before we even bought the car, and the renault main dealer should not have sold the car without carrying out this work first as they should have picked it up go the pre sales checks.

As such, could i reasonably claim their negligence in not servicing it in line with their own rules, and expect them to cover the repair costs?
