Thermostat replacement

Have just bought a 1997 1.8 8V Laguna 142k miles on the clock and still going strong.

She runs pretty well, but looks like the thermostat is stuck open (temp guage near zero + lukewarm heater).

As it is an old car, I was planning a quick and dirty thermostat replacement - the idea being to aviod draining the complete system. The plan is as follows:

1. Remove the upper hose from the radiator - this hopefully drain the coolant only to the top of the rad

2. Remove the rusty torx scres that hold the thermostat in place (this should be fun....)

3. Replace the thermostat and re-assemble

4. Top up header tank and assume that any air in the system finds its way into the header tank via the ressevior return pipe.

I know that I should bleed the system, but it looks like the bleed valve next to bulkhead has broken off.

Question is: will this work, and if not, will I get an air lock and kill the car?

Thanks for your help.
