Re: What's the scariest car failure you've had while driving?
Many moons ago I was a passenger in a modified Lotus 7. The diff has been changed for use during hill climbs and auto tests. To accomodate the new diff the propshaft had been shortened and welded.
To demonstrate it quick acceleration the driver floored the accelerator in second when suddenly the prop-shaft failed and forced it way up inside the car between the seats. The prop-shaft tunnel was made of pressed lightweight aluminium which was burst open with jagged edges.
Forunately the driver brought the car to a hasty stop but on beating a hasty retreat from the drivers seat his trousers caught on the jagged aluminum and he stood there his trousers in tatters. All we could do was roar with laughter - partly from embarassment - partly form nerves after being attacked by a wayward shaft inside the car.
It was discovered later the welding on the prop-shaft had failed due to very poor welding.
What do they say about poor workmanship coming back to bite you in the a$$.
