The good news: It's a nicely torquey engine for a 16v petrol and doesn't mind a good thrashing up to the red line either. Driven with a light right foot, the design supposedly gives very good fuel economy.
The bad news: Fuel economy's rarely anything to write home about in real life. Expect around 30mpg for motorway driving. The engine can be troublesome, with the worst common problem being loss of compression. This can happen at very low mileages (around 50K+) requiring a rebore or a replacement engine.
's supposed economy comes from running up to 25%
at low throttle openings. To achieve ignition, the injector is placed where the spark plug would usually be on a multivalve engine, with the plug inserted at an angle as it usually would be on a 2 valve per cylinder engine. Fuel is squirted from the injector straight onto the spark, which is why it can still ignite at such high
percentages. This is all from memory of an article that I found somewhere - with a bit of luck your forum search on
will find the link.
